The Most Reverend Salvatore R. Matano – In Residence

bishop_salvatore_200Bishop Salvatore R. Matano, was born in Providence and attended St. Ann School, La Salle Academy and Our Lady of Providence Seminary College in Warwick.  He completed his seminary studies at The Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy.  He was ordained to the priesthood on December 17, 1971 by James Cardinal Hickey at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy.

He served as assistant pastor of Our Lady of Grace Parish, Johnston; teacher at Our Lady of Providence Seminary High School; director of Priests’ Personnel Office; assistant chancellor; vice chancellor, vicar for administration; co-chancellor; pastor of St. Sebastian Parish, Providence; lecturer, Providence College; secretary to the Apostolic Pro-Nuncio, Apostolic Nunciature, in Washington.  He was appointed Domestic Prelate in 1985 and Prothonotary Apostolic in 1993.  Then Msgr. Matano served as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia for the Diocese of Providence from November 1992 until January 1997.  He was appointed Co-Adjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Burlington Vermont in March of 2005 and Bishop in November of 2005.  Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Rochester, New York on November 5, 2013 and  installed on January 3, 2014.
